The Follies are returning – bigger and better than ever – in February of 2008, benefiting The Sexual Assault Support Center (SASC). What an evening it will be, with an elaborate theatrical revue of music, dance, and skits performed by local celebrities and personalities.
The Sexual Assault Support Center, formerly Columbus Rape Crisis, was established in 1981, and has served thousands of men, women and children in our area ranging from 2 months to 96 years of age. Statistics show that 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 6 boys will become a victim of sexual assault by the age of 18. The victims are often our friends, family members or co-workers. In 2005, the SASC provided services to 120 victims in our community through emergency room and hotline support. Unfortunately, only 1 in 10 women will report a sexual assault so the "real" figures are even more alarming.
In addition to directly helping victims, prevention education and awareness are crucial in the fight against sexual assault. This effort includes visiting schools to teach programs such as Good Touch/Bad Touch, and promoting safety and prevention in our community with lectures, professional training, brochures and billboards.
SASC operates with a minimum of support thru a full-time director, a part-time secretary and 40 volunteers, thus assuring that the dollars raised go to the victims and not to the overhead of a large staff. SASC currently provides crisis intervention and support to the six County Chattahoochee Judicial Circuits of Muscogee, Harris, Talbot, Taylor, Marion, Chattahoochee as well as Ft. Benning.
Our 2000 Follies raised a total of $120,000 for two local organizations, the House of T.I.M.E. and Our House.
